Complications

As with all medical procedures, there is always a risk of complications.
With micro-dermabrasion, medical micro-dermabrasion and dermabrasion, the risks are in proportion with the severity, but also the effectiveness, of the treatments.

Complications of micro-dermabrasion:
There are very few risks with micro-dermabrasion. It is a very safe procedure. Most people get a very good result and the only question that has been raised is whether the repeated trauma to the skin can increase the risk of thread veins to the face or redness of the face.
However, many people suffer from thread veins of the face and as these can easily be treated by advanced electrolysis, IPL or laser, the advantages of micro-dermabrasion probably outweigh the small risk of thread vein formation.

Complications of medical micro-dermabrasion:

Similarly, medical micro-dermabrasion may slightly increase the risk of facial thread veins or redness of the face (rosacea). However, once again with micro-dermabrasion, the benefits from the clearer, healthier skin probably outweigh the possible risks.
Also, as medical micro-dermabrasion can be more aggressive that micro-dermabrasion, if the machine is turned up to cause complete dermabrasion, the complications will be the same as those listed below in dermabrasion.

Complications of dermabrasion:

If a full dermabrasion is produced, with damage right down through the layers of skin so that the full thickness of the skin is wounded, there is always then the risk of infection or scarring. This is because in normal life, the outer dead layers of cells protect the deeper layers from germs.
Of course, the whole idea of dermabrasion is to cause this damage in the first place, so that when the wound heals a new layer of skin is formed which gives a fresh, tighter and less wrinkled look with little in the way of skin blemishes.
However, although this damage is planned, you can rarely get either and infection which gets into the skin while it is still healing which will then need to be treated with antibiotics, or extra scarring can happen, giving a sub-optimal result. This would be discussed with you by your doctor before you undergo any treatment.
